In our ancient past, the link between our lives and the natural world was much more obvious than it is today. Beltaine was the time when the herds were moved from close to the homestead to summer pastures. Community rites and rituals grew to protect animals, crops and people, to bring fertility, abundance and good harvests.

May is my absolute favourite time of year. In the past, Marcus has planned Sacred Journeys in May. While I understand that he cannot control the Cosmos, I’ve made it clear that I do not ever intend to leave Cornwall in May!

At the beginning of May, plant life bursts into green beauty! The trees are in leaf; the grasses and flowers are in abundance; the hedgerows are exquisite; all is lush, fertile, delicious.

Beltaine is a celebration of the sacred union that creates all life - of Sun and Earth; of Green Man and Spring Maiden; of Horned God and Moon Goddess.

This time of year was not only honoured in ancient Britain but in other parts of Europe. One of the customs associated with modern May Day celebrations, the maypole and maypole dancing, are believed to have originated in ancient Germany and were then popularised in Victorian times.

Also, the ancient Greeks had Chloris and the Romans had Flora, the goddess of flowers and of spring.

There are now many modern revivals of spring festivals including the Padstow 'Obby 'Oss and Helston Flora Day.

As with so many things, dates are now 'fixed' and 'May Day' is on 1st May (8th for Flora Dance).

At Heaven & Earth Community we choose to honour the potent, ripe energy of Beltaine on, or close to, the Full Moon. This year we are holding a Crystal Open Day and Gathering on Sunday 11th May as the moon rises to full on Monday 12th.
The Crystal Open Day is from 11am to 4pm, after which we will gather to make beautiful spring crowns, to share food, to sit round the fire together. Everyone is welcome - youngest to oldest. (Sorry - no dogs).
